BREAKING NEWS!! SMR Program — But Will They Be Made in the UK?
This morning it was announced that the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) will be built at Wylfa on Anglesey, North Wales — a major milestone for the country’s nuclear and clean energy ambitions.
The project, led by Rolls-Royce SMR in partnership with Great British Nuclear, is expected to support around 3,000 jobs at peak construction, and forms part of the UK Government’s strategy to make Britain a global leader in clean energy generation.
But here’s the real question Paul and Lee have been discussing today:
👉 Will these SMRs truly be made in the UK — or will they just be assembled here from parts manufactured overseas?
That question matters a lot for the UK’s precision engineering and manufacturing sectors.
If we can manufacture the key components — pressure vessels, reactor modules, turbine systems — here at home, the economic and skills boost could be huge.
If not, we risk missing out on one of the most significant industrial opportunities of the decade.
We shot this segment earlier today in Bielefeld, Germany, which felt fitting — many of the precision components needed for SMRs could be machined on Starrag or similar high-end machines, like the ones we’ve been seeing in use here.
