The Warehouse Group Partners with TCS to Drive Strategic IT Modernisation!
By Ashutosh Arora
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the world’s leading IT services, consulting, and business solutions providers, has entered into a strategic partnership with The Warehouse Group (TWG) to accelerate the New Zealand retailer’s digital transformation agenda. The collaboration is aimed at driving IT modernisation and platform consolidation, unlocking greater value from TWG’s existing investments while preparing the company for long-term growth in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.
As part of the agreement, TCS will deploy its global expertise in retail technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and data management to simplify TWG’s IT infrastructure and reduce overall costs. By consolidating platforms and streamlining operations, TWG expects to achieve significant efficiencies across its value chain. A key outcome of the programme will be an estimated reduction in licensing and managed services expenses, with projected savings of up to \$40 million over the next five years. These savings will allow TWG’s in-house technology teams to focus on enhancing customer experiences, strengthening community engagement, and creating long-term shareholder value.
Mark Stirton, Group Chief Executive Officer of The Warehouse Group, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in driving the retailer’s next phase of transformation. “Over the past year we have focused on reducing costs, and this partnership takes us a step further. TCS will help us build on current initiatives, enabling greater value from the technology investments we’ve already made. The program is expected to cut licence and managed services costs by up to \$40 million over five years, freeing up our technology teams to concentrate on delivering better outcomes for customers, communities, and shareholders.”
The partnership will also place a strong emphasis on workforce enablement. TCS will design training initiatives to upskill TWG employees in digital and AI capabilities, ensuring the company’s workforce remains equipped for the future of retail. This people-focused element aligns with TWG’s broader mission of empowering employees to innovate and respond effectively to rapidly shifting consumer expectations.
Girish Ramachandran, President – Growth Markets at TCS, underscored the company’s commitment to creating enduring value for TWG. “We are honoured to partner with The Warehouse Group during this critical phase of its transformation. By applying our global experience in retail technology, AI, and data, we aim to streamline TWG’s systems and build future-ready capabilities that will create lasting value.” According to TCS, the engagement will also reduce technical debt, strengthen governance structures, and enhance transparency through improved service-level reporting.
TCS has maintained a strong presence in New Zealand for years, supporting businesses across industries with digital innovation. Through its Co-Innovation Network™ (COIN™), the company has facilitated collaborations between corporates, startups, and academia to accelerate technological advancement in the region. TCS has also been a key driver of sustainability initiatives, playing a prominent role in the Asia Pacific Digital Sustainability Index (2022), which benchmarks companies on their progress towards sustainable digital practices.
Beyond business, TCS contributes to the development of local talent through educational outreach programmes such as GoIT™ and GoIT™ Girls. These initiatives introduce students to technology and STEM careers, fostering the next generation of innovators in New Zealand.
With this new partnership, TWG is poised to achieve a dual objective: cutting costs while modernising its operations to remain agile in a fast-changing retail environment. For TCS, the collaboration represents yet another opportunity to apply its global expertise in a local context, creating tangible outcomes that benefit businesses, employees, and communities alike.
