Tata Motors Reshapes Leadership and Structure as Shailesh Chandra Steps In as MD & CEO!
By Ashutosh Arora
Tata Motors has announced significant leadership and structural changes that will come into effect on October 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the company. At the center of this transition is the appointment of Shailesh Chandra as Additional Director, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Motors Ltd for a three-year term. Chandra, who has been instrumental in driving the company’s electric mobility strategy, will continue to head Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the company’s wholly-owned EV subsidiary, alongside his new responsibilities. His elevation follows the resignation of PB Balaji as Group CEO, who will be moving to the United Kingdom to assume charge as CEO of Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc (JLR).
This leadership change comes at a defining moment for Tata Motors as the company continues its transformation journey. In line with its vision for sharper strategic focus, the company has announced a reorganization of its operations into two separate entities. The commercial vehicles business, along with its related investments, will now operate under TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd. Meanwhile, the passenger vehicles segment, which includes passenger cars, electric vehicles, JLR, and associated investments, will remain under Tata Motors Ltd. This structural realignment is designed to enhance agility, improve customer focus, and position the company more effectively for the future.
To lead the newly carved-out commercial vehicles entity, Tata Motors has appointed Girish Wagh as Additional Director, Managing Director, and CEO of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd, also effective October 1. Wagh, who has been closely associated with the company’s commercial vehicles business for many years, brings deep expertise in product development and strategic execution, making him well-suited to drive growth in this critical segment.
The Tata Motors board has also strengthened its leadership bench with new appointments. Sudha Krishnan joins as an Additional Non-Executive Independent Director for a five-year term beginning October 1. At the same time, Hanne Sorensen will continue as Director on the Board of JLR Automotive Plc in the UK, while Kosaraju Veerayya Chowdary and Guenter Karl Butschek will be inducted into the board of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd. These additions reinforce the company’s governance framework and bring diverse experience to guide its future direction.
Chandra, who has been with Tata Motors since 2016, has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s corporate strategy and spearheading its entry into the electric mobility space. As President of Electric Mobility Business and Corporate Strategy, he drove the development of TPEM into a market leader, establishing Tata Motors as the clear frontrunner in India’s EV industry. Prior to his tenure at Tata Motors, he was part of Tata Sons in the Group Strategy and Chairman’s Office, contributing to group-level initiatives. His international experience and cross-functional expertise add further strength to his leadership profile.
An alumnus of Banaras Hindu University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Chandra also holds an executive MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research. His leadership is expected to further accelerate Tata Motors’ ambitions in both traditional and new-age mobility segments.
With these changes, Tata Motors is signaling a sharper focus on its dual growth engines: the commercial vehicles business, which remains a backbone of India’s economy, and the passenger and electric vehicles business, which is shaping the future of mobility. The new leadership structure, combined with strategic continuity, positions Tata Motors to build on its legacy while preparing for the evolving dynamics of the global automotive industry.
