By Ashutosh Arora
Tata Electronics Private Limited and Merck Electronics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem, marking a major step in the country’s ambition to become a global hub for chip manufacturing. The partnership will focus on advancing semiconductor materials, fabrication infrastructure, and the distribution of specialty chemicals and gases.
Under the agreement, Merck will supply Tata Electronics with its portfolio of high-purity materials, advanced gas and chemical delivery systems, fab infrastructure services, and AI-powered Material Intelligence™ solutions. Merck will also share global best practices in manufacturing excellence and safety, alongside enabling collaboration through its secure analytics platform, Athinia®. The partnership includes plans for localized warehousing, raw material supply chains, workforce development, and the creation of industry-wide processes and standards within India.
Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, stated that the collaboration aligns with the company’s vision of building “world-class semiconductor manufacturing solutions from India, with a focus on safety, quality, and innovation.” Dr. Kai Beckmann, Member of the Executive Board of Merck and CEO Electronics, added that the agreement demonstrates Merck’s commitment to India’s semiconductor journey and its strategy of enabling growth markets through precision and innovation.
The MoU supports the India Semiconductor Mission, with Tata Electronics investing ₹91,000 crore (US\$11 billion) in India’s first semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera, Gujarat. The fab will manufacture chips for automotive, AI, and mobile device applications. With Merck’s expertise in semiconductor materials and sub-fab services, the partnership is expected to accelerate execution and strengthen India’s integration into the global semiconductor value chain.
Founded in 2020 as a greenfield venture of the Tata Group, Tata Electronics has rapidly emerged as a global player across electronics manufacturing, semiconductor assembly & test, foundry, and design services. With a workforce of over 70,000 employees and major operations in Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, the company emphasizes socio-economic impact by generating inclusive employment—particularly for women—and investing in community initiatives across education, healthcare, environment, and livelihood development.
