Qatar Airways and GE Aerospace Sign Historic Widebody Engine Deal in Landmark Expansion

In a major expansion of their long-standing partnership, Qatar Airways and GE Aerospace have signed a series of landmark agreements during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Doha. The deals include the purchase of over 400 GE9X and GEnx engines, representing the largest widebody engine order in GE Aerospace’s history.

The agreements cover 60 GE9X engines to power Qatar Airways’ upcoming fleet of Boeing 777-9 aircraft and 260 GEnx engines for its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The deal also includes a comprehensive package of spare engines and long-term maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, reinforcing Qatar Airways’ commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.

This latest announcement builds on Qatar Airways’ previous order of 188 GE9X engines, bringing the total to 248 units, and adds to its existing commitment for 124 GEnx engines. These next-generation powerplants are central to the airline’s strategy to maintain one of the world’s most modern, fuel-efficient fleets.

The GE9X engine is the most powerful commercial aircraft engine in the world and the most fuel-efficient in its class, offering a 10% improvement in specific fuel consumption over its predecessor. The GEnx engine family, in service since 2011, has logged over 62 million flight hours and powers two-thirds of the global 787 fleet.

Both engines are certified to operate on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends, reinforcing Qatar Airways’ and GE Aerospace’s shared commitment to a lower-carbon future. The partnership also includes On Wing Support and local talent development through GE’s support centre in Qatar, contributing to the region’s growing aviation capabilities.
