ABB India has announced a major expansion in its manufacturing capabilities with a strategic investment of over ₹140 crore to upgrade and enlarge its Low Voltage motors plant. This initiative marks an important milestone in the company’s journey, as it coincides with the launch of India’s first IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors. With this development, ABB is positioning India not only as a key hub for its global operations but also as a leader in the adoption of advanced, sustainable motor technologies.

The investment is more than a capacity enhancement; it reflects ABB’s long-term commitment to strengthening India’s role in global manufacturing. Stefan Floeck, President – IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB, explained that this step underscores ABB’s belief in India’s potential to emerge as a major player on the world stage. He emphasized that as industries demand more energy-efficient solutions, ABB is focused on delivering innovations that combine high performance with sustainability.

At the heart of this expansion is the introduction of ABB’s IE5 motors, the first of their kind in India built on induction motor technology. These motors achieve ultra-premium efficiency without relying on rare-earth elements, making them both environmentally responsible and resilient to supply chain challenges. They are designed to withstand tough industrial conditions while maintaining high performance, with power ratings ranging from 45 kW to 1000 kW. Compared to conventional IE3 motors, ABB’s IE5 motors reduce energy losses by up to 40 percent. This means manufacturers can benefit from lower energy consumption, faster return on investment, reduced total cost of ownership, and a longer operational life cycle.

Sanjeev Arora, President – Motion Business & IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB India, highlighted the significance of this technology for Indian industries. He noted that the new motors bring together the reliability of traditional induction technology with efficiency standards that set a new benchmark, all while avoiding dependency on rare-earth materials. According to him, these motors are engineered specifically for Indian operating conditions and will help industries transition to cleaner, more sustainable practices.

Another key advantage of the IE5 range is its compatibility with both Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) operations. This makes the motors highly versatile and suitable for a wide range of sectors, including metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and paper. The ability to operate efficiently across such diverse industries further enhances their value in driving productivity while supporting energy conservation goals.

This announcement also reaffirms ABB’s deep-rooted legacy in India, where the company has been active for more than 75 years. Over the decades, ABB has consistently invested in strengthening the country’s industrial backbone through cutting-edge technology, infrastructure, and innovation. The expansion of the LV motors facility and the introduction of the IE5 range serve as a testament to ABB’s vision of making India a global hub for advanced electrification and automation solutions.

By combining investment in local capacity with the launch of world-class, sustainable technologies, ABB India is setting the stage for a future where industries can achieve higher efficiency, greater productivity, and improved sustainability. This move not only supports the country’s broader manufacturing and energy transition goals but also reinforces ABB’s position as a technology leader committed to shaping the future of industrial growth in India and beyond.
