JSW Energy to Commission 5 GWh Battery Assembly Facility in Pune by Q3 FY26!
By Ashutosh Arora
JSW Energy is set to take a major leap in India’s energy storage landscape with the commissioning of its 5 GWh battery assembly plant in Pune, Maharashtra, scheduled to begin operations by the third quarter of FY26. The development marks a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the clean energy ecosystem and support India’s growing demand for sustainable power solutions.
During a recent investor interaction, Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, shared updates on the project’s progress. He confirmed that the trial runs for the company’s green hydrogen project at Vijayanagar — with a capacity of 3,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) — are nearing completion, and the plant is expected to be commissioned soon. The combination of green hydrogen production and large-scale battery storage places JSW Energy among the few integrated clean energy players in the country.
The Pune battery assembly facility will primarily focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) — a key technology for balancing renewable energy supply and demand. Mr. Mahendra emphasized that the new facility will not only enhance JSW Energy’s technical capabilities in energy storage but will also help the company comply with domestic content norms for BESS once they are enforced. This aligns with the government’s emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat and local manufacturing in critical energy sectors.
JSW Energy’s financial performance for the July–September 2025 quarter reflects strong top-line growth, with total revenue surging 59% year-on-year to ₹5,361 crore, up from ₹3,459 crore in the same period last year. However, the company’s consolidated net profit declined by 17% to ₹705 crore, compared to ₹853 crore in FY25. Despite the temporary dip in profit, the company remains optimistic about its long-term growth, driven by capacity expansion and diversification into new energy technologies.
Currently, JSW Energy boasts a locked-in energy storage capacity of 29.4 GWh, with firm agreements in place for 25.2 GWh. This growing portfolio underscores the company’s strong positioning in the energy storage segment — a sector expected to play a pivotal role in India’s renewable energy transition.
Looking ahead, JSW Energy aims to achieve 30 GW of total power generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by 2030. This ambitious roadmap reflects its commitment to becoming a major contributor to India’s cleaner, greener, and more resilient power grid.
A key subsidiary of the $23 billion JSW Group, JSW Energy began its journey in 2000 with a 260 MW thermal power plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka. Over the past two decades, it has expanded into diverse areas of power generation and transmission while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability, governance, and efficient capital allocation.
Today, the company is executing projects totaling 12.5 GW across various locations, further solidifying its position as one of India’s leading private power producers. With the Pune battery assembly plant and green hydrogen initiatives nearing fruition, JSW Energy is well on its way to redefining India’s energy future through innovation, sustainability, and technology-driven growth.
