Jergens MT-S Spindle Gripper Enables Unattended Machining and Higher Machine Utilization!
By Ashutosh Arora
Jergens Inc. has expanded its automation-focused workholding lineup with the introduction of the MT-S Spindle Gripper, a versatile solution designed to support unattended machining and optimize machine utilization. Developed as a first-level automation device, the MT-S offers manufacturers an efficient, robot-free method of picking and placing finished components directly within the machining environment.
The MT-S spindle gripper is engineered to keep machines running longer by automating part handling during machining cycles. Instead of relying on an external robot or operator, the gripper is stored in the tool magazine just like any standard cutting tool. At the end of each cycle, the CNC program engages the MT-S to pick up a finished part and place it into a temporary part-loading tray mounted on the machine table. This enables continuous machining of multiple parts with minimal human intervention, making it ideal for small to medium batch production.
Depending on the geometry and size of the components, the MT-S can store a significant number of finished parts before requiring operator attention. This capability ensures consistent machine operation, improves throughput and reduces downtime caused by frequent manual loading and unloading. The system’s easily adjustable gripping force, combined with an integrated counterbalance mechanism, ensures safe handling and protects delicate or precision-machined parts during transfer.
To accommodate a wide range of applications, the MT-S is available with various gripper styles and quick-change inserts that can be matched to different part shapes and geometries. Its power source can be configured either pneumatically—using air delivered through the machine spindle—or hydraulically through the coolant supply, allowing manufacturers flexibility based on their existing machine setup.
The spindle gripper is capable of handling workpieces weighing up to 17.6 lbs (8 kg), making it a practical solution for many general machining operations. Since it operates entirely within the machine envelope, the MT-S requires no additional floor space—a significant advantage over traditional robotic systems. It also offers lower upfront investment and simpler training, as it eliminates the need for complex robot programming or external automation infrastructure.
Jergens highlights the MT-S as part of its broader automation ecosystem, which includes complementary tools such as machine washdown systems, zero-point workholding solutions and pneumatic and hydraulic clamping devices. Together, these products help shops increase productivity, reduce manual labor and take advantage of more efficient, repeatable machining workflows.
With the MT-S spindle gripper, manufacturers gain a straightforward, cost-effective path into automation—unlocking longer unattended run times, better spindle utilization and more predictable part production without the complexity of full robotic integration.
