Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry Co., Ltd. has unveiled the NT-Flex+, a new specification for its precision CNC multitasking lathe NT-Flex. Designed to combine compactness with high functionality, the NT-Flex+ introduces advanced machining features, including an X-axis on the R-spindle, a Y-axis on the lower turret, and an optional retractable NC tailstock. These upgrades expand the platform’s ability to handle more complex machining patterns while offering manufacturers greater flexibility on the production floor.

The NT-Flex series was originally introduced with a focus on compact design and versatility, featuring a slim machine depth of just 1,380 mm. This small footprint allows the system to be installed even in tight factory spaces, enabling efficient plant layouts without sacrificing capability. With its milling capability of up to 10,000 min⁻¹ and a Y-axis on the upper turret, the NT-Flex already offered a full range of machining processes, including turning, milling, threading, and gear cutting. Meeting Nakamura-Tome’s stringent rigidity standards, the platform provides substantial machining capability in a highly compact form, catering to diverse materials and applications.

The NT-Flex+ builds upon this foundation with three significant advancements. The X-axis travel on the R-spindle allows for optimized use of internal space and reduces potential interference during operations. The Y-axis travel on the lower turret further broadens machining options, enabling three-tool simultaneous operations when combined with the upper turret. Meanwhile, the optional NC tailstock—retracted behind the R-spindle during idle states—can be freely positioned as needed, supporting long workpieces on the L-spindle while both turrets perform simultaneous operations. Together, these features allow the NT-Flex+ to deliver stable processing of both complex components and extended workpieces in a single machine.

According to Nakamura-Tome, the NT-Flex+ embodies its design philosophy of “Compact Meets Flexibility.” The two-turret, two-spindle configuration enhances multitasking efficiency, while the combination of X-axis travel and tailstock support provides greater stability for challenging parts. For manufacturers navigating rapidly changing production demands, this flexibility translates into faster setup, smoother automation, and more precise machining across a wide variety of parts.

Commenting on the launch, Shogo Nakamura, CEO of Nakamura-Tome, emphasized the strategic importance of the NT-Flex+ to modern production environments. “This new specification offers remarkable versatility in an ultra-compact size with a footprint of just 1.38 meters in depth. By enabling simultaneous machining on both sides while supporting long workpieces with the tailstock, the NT-Flex+ helps customers meet diverse manufacturing needs with just one compact machine. In today’s rapidly changing world, manufacturers often face the challenge of shifting product demands, and we believe the NT-Flex+ provides the agility and precision they need to stay competitive.”

The NT-Flex+ is aimed at shops that require compact yet powerful solutions to handle evolving part complexities without investing in multiple machines. By consolidating processes, minimizing setups, and improving stability for long workpieces, the NT-Flex+ offers both economic and operational advantages, further strengthening Nakamura-Tome’s position in the global precision machining market.
