Danfoss Power Solutions has announced the launch of the Editron EM-PMI180, an advanced 48-volt synchronous reluctance-assisted permanent magnet motor engineered specifically for hydraulic gear pumps in compact electric machinery. With electric construction equipment rapidly gaining adoption across the globe, the PMI180 has been designed to deliver higher efficiency, improved performance, and reduced packaging requirements for machines such as scissor lifts, boom lifts, compact loaders, and small excavators.

The new motor marks a significant step forward from the bulkier AC induction motors traditionally used in mobile elevating work platforms. Danfoss reports that the PMI180 delivers approximately 15% higher efficiency while occupying 15% less space, making it especially suitable for compact equipment where every millimeter of space matters. Its advanced hairpin winding technology boosts power density and overall efficiency far beyond what conventional round-wire windings can achieve, allowing OEMs to build smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient hydraulic systems.

In terms of capability, the Editron PMI180 offers 7 kW of rated power at 48 V DC and a rated speed of 3,000 rpm, with the ability to reach up to 4,000 rpm when required. It provides 22.5 Nm of rated torque and a peak torque capability of up to 90 Nm, making it highly adaptable for demanding hydraulic applications. The motor is compatible with standard hydraulic gear pump interfaces and is suitable for pumps up to 16 cc at pressures of 240 bar. To ensure durability in harsh operating conditions, the PMI180 comes with an IP67 protection rating and has passed a 200-hour salt-spray corrosion test, reinforcing its suitability for rugged construction environments.

Danfoss has designed the motor to integrate seamlessly with its upcoming EC-C48 inverter, expected to launch in 2026. This pairing will enable OEMs to develop compact electric equipment with optimized space usage, especially in machines where batteries, hydraulics, and electronics must be packaged efficiently. Additionally, Danfoss revealed plans for the ED-DT180 eDrive, a 48-volt integrated drive system that will combine a motor, reduction gearbox, and electromagnetic brake. Targeted at mobile elevating work platforms and other off-highway equipment, the system will expand Danfoss’s growing portfolio of low-voltage electrification solutions, complementing the 24-volt version introduced in 2024.

Eric Wang, Application Engineering and Portfolio Manager for Editron China at Danfoss Power Solutions, emphasized that the PMI180 reflects the company’s engineering depth and long-standing commitment to quality. He noted that while Editron is widely recognized for its high-voltage systems, the company is strategically expanding into low-voltage technology to support the evolving needs of compact, battery-powered construction machinery.

As a global leader in hydraulic, electric, and electronic systems for mobile and industrial equipment, Danfoss Power Solutions continues to push the boundaries of efficiency, sustainability, and performance. The EMI-PMI180 represents another milestone in its mission to support the transformation of construction, agricultural, and material-handling equipment toward cleaner, smarter, and more energy-efficient solutions.
