Reshoring poll: Will Covid drive UK industry?

Monday 1 June 2020, 11:30:57 PM

22 industrial engineering associations have applauded a recent poll on ‘Will the pandemic drive reshoring of UK manufacturing?’

“Ever since manufacturers began outsourcing production to more competitively priced overseas economies there has been a race to the bottom,” states Reshoring UK CEO Julia Moore. “However, there is value attached to UK manufacturing. Reshoring UK highlights the skills and resources of UK supply chains when considering domestic production for new projects or existing programmes.” With the Covid-19 pandemic exposing the frailties of UK supply chains, underlining how reliant many have become on overseas supply, there should be more impetus on re-establishing UK production.

“We know its a myth the UK no longer manufactures anything, but it needs to be dispelled. In reality, pre-pandemic we were the ninth largest manufacturing nation in the world, contributing 10% of the UK Gross Value Added (GVA).” The www.reshoring.uk partnership urges manufacturers to seize the opportunity to reconsider its supply base and contact Julia Moore at Reshoring UK at info@reshoring.uk. The new mask production facility will create 450 jobs at the site. The Newhouse plant assembles and tests electronic systems, as well as other advanced manufacturing functions, which will continue alongside the new mask line.
