GM and Samsung SDI are collaborating to build a $3 billion EV battery cell plant in Indiana
The businesses launched a joint venture in April to create a more than $3 billion electric vehicle battery cell plant, but no location was specified. Governor Eric Holcomb stated in a statement on Tuesday that the plant will create 1,700 manufacturing jobs.
This is General Motors’ fourth joint venture battery cell facility. It has announced three further collaborations with LG Energy Solution of South Korea. A 900-person facility near Warren, Ohio, has begun cell production, and operations in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Lansing, Michigan, are in the planning stages.
The new Indiana plant will house production lines for the manufacture of nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells, and it is projected to considerably boost the accessibility and cost of electric vehicles. When completed, the plant will have a capacity of more than 30 GWh.
GM employs over 5,700 people at five Indiana plants. It has announced that by 2035, it intends to sell entirely electric vehicles.
Construction on the new factory is planned to begin within the next year, supporting over 1,000 jobs during the construction period. The firms want to begin manufacturing in New Carlisle in 2026.
