The team from TCT in the UK caught sight of the distinctive four inverted pyramids against the backdrop of a clear blue sky from the Yurikamome metro line, the excitement of being in Japan for the sixth consecutive year was palpable. The bustling crowds at TCT Japan 2024 reflected a burgeoning interest in additive manufacturing (AM) in a market traditionally perceived as slow to adopt such technology. However, it seems that perceptions are rapidly changing.
Throughout the week, the conference theatre was filled to capacity, with delegates queuing eagerly to hear insights from a diverse lineup of speakers representing both established and emerging voices in the industrial 3D printing realm. This year’s international speakers, including representatives from Wohlers Associates, Boston Consulting Group, and Nissan, led discussions on market trends, sustainability, and real-world applications.
Terry Wohlers, Head of Advisory Services and Market Intelligence at Wohlers Associates, powered by ASTM International, provided a comprehensive overview of the global AM industry. Highlighting the latest findings from the Wohlers Report, Wohlers emphasized the increasing demand for functional parts, with over 30% of applications identified as end-use parts. He stressed the importance of industry leaders driving adoption, citing examples such as Cadillac’s integration of 3D printed parts in its luxury e-vehicle, CELESTIQ.
Wilderich Heising, Partner & Associate Director at Boston Consulting Group, offered insights into the current state of the AM industry, emphasizing the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the sector’s rapid evolution. He highlighted Nikon’s acquisition of SLM Solutions and its strategic investments in AM activities as a significant development. Heising emphasized the need for AM players to offer integrated solutions while emphasizing the importance of delivering value to end-users.
