Sunnen HTA Tube Hone Delivers Precision, Efficiency, and Safety in Bore Finishing!
By Ashutosh Arora
Sunnen Products Co. has introduced the HTA Tube Hone, an advanced, entry-level machine engineered to raise the standards of performance, efficiency, and precision in bore finishing operations. Designed with hydraulic cylinder repair in mind, the HTA Tube Hone offers an innovative blend of reliability, ergonomics, and advanced technology, making it an excellent choice for shops looking to streamline their honing processes without compromising on accuracy.
What sets the HTA Tube Hone apart is its all-electric design, which provides several advantages over traditional hydraulic systems. By eliminating oil leaks and reducing noise, the machine not only promotes a cleaner and quieter work environment but also improves control and precision during bore reversals. Its leaner footprint allows for easy integration into existing shop floors while delivering the power and accuracy required for a wide variety of resurfacing and repair tasks.
At the heart of the machine is an electromagnetic Siemens Servo Stroker Motor with a belt drive, delivering exceptionally quiet and controlled operation. The system is paired with a 3-hp (2.24-kW) spindle unit that offers spindle speeds from 20 to 300 rpm, while the servo stroker delivers adjustable speeds from 5 to 90 ft/min (1.5–27.4 m/min). This flexibility ensures that the HTA Tube Hone is capable of handling a wide range of bore finishing applications, delivering consistent results whether for light repairs or more demanding resurfacing jobs.
Efficiency is further enhanced through the programmable auto tool feed system, which ensures uniform material removal and improved repeatability while minimizing manual intervention. To maintain clean and reliable performance, the machine comes equipped with a 55-gallon paper media coolant filtration unit. This system, complete with quick disconnects, casters, a sight glass, and a manual paper bed filter, effectively keeps coolant free of contaminants, thereby extending abrasive life and enhancing honing quality.
The HTA Tube Hone is also designed with a strong emphasis on ergonomics and operator safety. Manual handling and repetitive movements are minimized thanks to features like the stroker joystick, which enables precise tool positioning and stroke length adjustments during setup. Stroke control override allows operators to short-stroke specific areas of the bore, making it easier to clean up tight spots. A swiveling operator station adds to user comfort, while the Siemens PLC with a full-color touchscreen ensures intuitive control of all machine functions, including stroke reversal, speed settings, and crosshatch angle calculations. Multiple language options and the ability to switch between metric and inch measurements make the machine adaptable to diverse shop environments.
Practicality is also central to the HTA Tube Hone’s design. It features a load meter for quick identification of tight spots, a universal V-block work holding system for fast and flexible part fixturing, and an integral work tray that combines with the operator console and enclosure for a cleaner workspace. Furthermore, compatibility with ANR-275 tooling provides additional value, allowing shops already using ANR-style systems to continue utilizing existing stone supports, master holders, and abrasives without the need for major retooling investments.
By combining advanced technology with user-friendly features and robust design, the Sunnen HTA Tube Hone offers manufacturers an opportunity to significantly improve bore finishing operations. Whether the goal is achieving tighter tolerances, boosting throughput, or reducing operator strain, the HTA delivers an all-in-one solution that embodies precision, efficiency, and safety.
