Renishaw Announces the Passing of Co-Founder Sir David McMurtry!

Renishaw has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Sir David McMurtry, its co-founder and non-executive director, whose pioneering contributions transformed the metrology and manufacturing industries.
Sir David co-founded Renishaw in 1973 with John Deer, his colleague at Rolls-Royce, to commercialize the 3D touch-trigger probe, which he invented in 1972. This groundbreaking invention addressed manufacturing challenges in the production of Olympus engines for the Concorde aircraft. Throughout his career, Sir David was credited with over 200 patents, showcasing his visionary approach to solving real-world engineering problems.
Under his leadership, Renishaw revolutionized coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), shopfloor metrology, and process control, further diversifying into areas such as encoders, calibration systems, additive manufacturing, and even neurosurgery. His ability to integrate concepts from multiple scientific disciplines set him apart as a true innovator.
Sir David believed in creating a company that stood apart in its approach to technology, manufacturing, and customer relationships. Renishaw’s success reflects his commitment to long-term investment, in-house manufacturing, and partnership with local communities and customers. Despite his achievements, Sir David remained a humble leader, known for mentoring young engineers and avoiding the limelight.
Over his lifetime, Sir David received numerous prestigious awards, including:
- Knighthood for Services to Design and Innovation (2001)
- Royal Designer for Industry (1989)
- James Watt International Gold Medal (2019)
- Swan Medal from the Institute of Physics (2012)
- Master of Manufacturing by the U.S. Society of Manufacturing Engineers (2008)
He was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Society, among others.
Sir David’s contributions to the manufacturing industry and his unwavering dedication to innovation have left an indelible mark. As a mentor, leader, and visionary, he inspired generations of engineers and guided Renishaw to become a global leader in metrology and advanced manufacturing.
