OIC, Medi Mold and AddUp Partner to Launch Orthopaedic Implant Facility in India!
By Ashutosh Arora
A new collaboration between OIC International of the United States, Medi Mold of India, and AddUp of France is set to transform the orthopaedic implant manufacturing landscape in India. The three companies have partnered to establish a state-of-the-art production facility at the Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam, a dedicated medical device manufacturing park that has become a hub for healthcare technology innovation.
The facility will focus on the production of orthopaedic implants using Additive Manufacturing combined with advanced precision engineering practices. By leveraging this combination, the partners aim to deliver high-quality implants that meet the demands of both domestic and international markets. The implants will be manufactured using AddUp’s FormUp series of metal Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) machines, known for their accuracy, reliability, and ability to produce complex geometries that are difficult to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods.
OIC International, which has extensive experience in the global orthopaedics sector, plans to launch a full line of additively manufactured implants from this facility. Medi Mold, a company with strong expertise in medical manufacturing and operational management, will operate the plant, ensuring production efficiency and scalability. AddUp, with its roots in advanced metal Additive Manufacturing, will provide the technological backbone that enables the creation of implants with enhanced performance characteristics.
The partnership is designed to tackle three of the most significant challenges facing the orthopaedic sector: innovation, affordability, and market access. From an innovation perspective, the facility will introduce cutting-edge Additive Manufacturing techniques that allow for the development of customized and high-performance implants, potentially improving patient outcomes and recovery times. Affordability is another key priority. By producing implants locally within India, the partners expect to reduce costs substantially compared to imported alternatives, making advanced orthopaedic solutions more accessible to patients across socioeconomic levels.
Market access represents the third pillar of the project. The facility will produce implants tailored for two distinct but overlapping markets. On one hand, it will support public sector procurement, supplying cost-effective implants to government hospitals and healthcare schemes that aim to improve treatment availability for large populations. On the other hand, OIC will leverage the facility to serve India’s rapidly growing private healthcare market, which increasingly demands advanced medical devices and cutting-edge surgical solutions.
The establishment of this facility also reflects the larger momentum within India to localize the production of high-value medical devices. By situating operations within the AMTZ medical device manufacturing park, the partnership will benefit from shared infrastructure, specialized support services, and proximity to regulatory and testing resources. This environment will not only accelerate time-to-market but also ensure compliance with global standards.
In addition to strengthening India’s position in the global orthopaedics market, the project represents a model for international collaboration in healthcare manufacturing. By combining the global expertise of OIC, the local capabilities of Medi Mold, and the advanced technology of AddUp, the new venture demonstrates how multinational partnerships can address pressing challenges in affordability and accessibility while pushing the boundaries of medical innovation.
With the launch of this facility, patients in India and beyond can look forward to greater access to advanced, affordable, and high-quality orthopaedic implants, marking a significant step forward in the integration of Additive Manufacturing into mainstream healthcare solutions.
