Aerotech Inc., a global leader in precision motion and automation technology, introduced its new Automation1-HXA4 and Automation1-iHXA4 drives, marking a significant advancement in hexapod motion control. These next-generation drives are designed to simplify how engineers operate six-axis hexapod systems by allowing them to control a hexapod as seamlessly as any other axis within the Automation1 ecosystem. This approach streamlines system architecture, reduces integration complexity, and lowers the overall barrier to adopting high-performance hexapod technology across a wide range of industries.

According to Brian Fink, Product Manager at Aerotech, the new drive models were developed with a clear objective: to simplify multi-axis coordination without compromising precision or responsiveness. By offering strong performance at competitive price points, Aerotech aims to make advanced hexapod motion control more accessible for applications in fields such as semiconductor manufacturing, optics, robotics, aerospace testing, and scientific research.

The Automation1-HXA4 and Automation1-iHXA4 drives have been engineered to work seamlessly with Aerotech’s latest-generation hexapods, including models such as the HEX150-125HL. They integrate tightly with the company’s Automation1 platform, which encompasses motion controllers, motor drives, a HyperWire® fiber-optic communication network, development tools, and the wider automation ecosystem. The Automation1-HXA4 model features both a controller and drive in one compact unit, offering a streamlined solution that reduces system footprint and simplifies setup.

One of the key advantages of these new drives is their compact design, which helps reduce control-panel space while making integration into existing equipment layouts easier and more efficient. Installation has also been simplified—each hexapod requires only two connectors, and the drives include robust analog and digital I/O options to reduce wiring needs. This streamlined connectivity supports cleaner setups, faster commissioning, and reduced risk of installation errors.

In terms of performance, the drives incorporate Aerotech’s advanced control technologies to achieve high levels of accuracy and responsiveness. Features such as Part-Speed Position-Synchronized Output (PSO) enable precise synchronization between motion and external devices, making the system especially suitable for applications requiring laser processing, scanning, or tightly coordinated movements. Additionally, built-in Safe Torque Off (STO) functionality enhances operational safety by ensuring that motion can be securely disabled when needed.

By enabling hexapods to operate like any other axis within a motion system, the drives significantly simplify multi-axis coordination and reduce the learning curve typically associated with six-degree-of-freedom platforms. This alignment within the Automation1 environment helps users achieve smooth, synchronized motion across complex setups.

Overall, Aerotech’s Automation1-HXA4 and Automation1-iHXA4 drives represent a major step forward in making high-precision hexapod motion control more accessible, flexible, and cost-effective. Their combination of compact design, advanced control features, and seamless integration positions them as powerful tools for industries seeking to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and performance in demanding multi-axis motion applications.
