Mitsubishi Materials, a global leader in cutting tool technology, has announced the launch of its latest innovation—the MC/MP7100 series of coated carbide grades—engineered specifically for the challenges of stainless steel turning. This new lineup represents a significant leap in tool performance, combining next-generation coating technology with a specialized carbide substrate to deliver higher productivity, extended tool life, and greater process reliability for manufacturers.

One of the most notable advancements in the MC/MP7100 series is Mitsubishi’s use of “Super” Nano Texture Technology. Building upon its existing Nano Texture expertise, the company has now achieved exceptional crystal orientation control in the Al₂O₃ coating layer. This results in a fine, dense crystalline structure that enhances wear resistance, significantly boosts coating adhesion strength, and suppresses the risk of notching—a common challenge when machining stainless steels. By optimizing the coating-substrate interface, these tools maintain consistent performance even under demanding conditions.

In addition to coating innovations, the series benefits from a dedicated carbide substrate tailored to withstand the rigors of stainless steel turning. The substrate resists deformation and micro-fracturing, providing the toughness needed to handle interrupted cuts and difficult-to-machine alloys while still maintaining sharp cutting edges for smooth operations.

The MC/MP7100 series is offered in three distinct grades, each designed to meet specific machining requirements:

  • MC7115 – A CVD-coated carbide grade developed for high-speed cutting of medium to large austenitic stainless steel components. It excels in stable operations where cutting speeds exceed 820 SFM, making it ideal for automotive, energy, and heavy equipment manufacturing sectors.
  • MC7125 – A versatile CVD-coated grade engineered for a broad spectrum of stainless steel applications. With the ability to handle both continuous and interrupted cuts, this grade provides flexibility for shops that require one tool solution across multiple machining scenarios.
  • MP7135 – A PVD-coated carbide grade designed for impact resistance and toughness. It is particularly effective in intermittent cutting and rough machining of forged and cast products, where cutting edges face high stresses.

The development of the MC/MP7100 series comes at a time when manufacturers across industries such as aerospace, medical devices, oil & gas, and automotive are pushing the limits of machining performance. Stainless steels, while offering durability and corrosion resistance, remain notoriously difficult to machine due to their work-hardening properties and tendency to cause tool wear. Mitsubishi’s latest grades directly address these challenges, enabling users to achieve higher cutting speeds, reduced downtime, and lower overall costs per part.

By integrating Super Nano Texture Technology, robust substrate engineering, and tailored grade options, Mitsubishi Materials has set a new benchmark in stainless steel turning solutions. Whether it’s achieving faster cycle times, tackling tough interrupted cuts, or extending tool longevity, the MC/MP7100 series provides manufacturers with the precision and reliability required to stay competitive in today’s demanding production environments.
