Mastering Machining: Enhancing 3D Printing with the Digital Thread

Monday 12 February 2024, 10:55:38 AM

Machining poses a challenge in achieving flawless 3D printing results as designers must ensure parts are machine-friendly and accessible for critical surface machining. The digital thread plays a crucial role by connecting designers with machining simulations to refine parts accordingly.

Adam Hiller, an expert in additive manufacturing and Siemens Xcelerator portfolio solutions consultant at Siemens Digital Industries Software, utilized Siemens software solutions interconnected by the digital thread to design a 3D printed steering knuckle for a Kyburz eRod (electric dune buggy). Hiller emphasizes a holistic lifecycle approach, focusing not only on part aesthetics but also on downstream automation possibilities.

Key features of the as-printed part designed with machining in mind include:

  • Triangular mounting feature within the center spindle hole, later milled out for mounting purposes.
  • Additional material in bolt holes, ensuring quality and precision where the part attaches to the vehicle.
  • Extra material on critical surfaces to facilitate a flush fit when machined for contact with the vehicle.
  • Machinable support structures designed for automated removal post-printing to support overhanging features and prevent warpage.
  • Trumpet mounting feature introduced during machining simulation to securely mount parts on the build plate and prevent vibration-related detachment risks.
