Jergens Introduces MT-S Spindle Gripper for Smarter Unattended Machining!
By Ashutosh Arora
Jergens has expanded its well-known range of workholding and automation solutions with the launch of the new MT-S Spindle Gripper, designed to enhance unattended machining and maximize machine utilization. This innovative tool offers manufacturers a practical, first-level automation option that allows continuous machining cycles without the immediate need for robots or additional equipment.
The MT-S Spindle Gripper is engineered to pick and place finished components into a temporary part loading tray located on the machine table. Stored in the tool magazine like any standard tool, it can be automatically engaged at the end of each machining cycle. This means the gripper itself becomes part of the machining process, allowing pre-loaded raw parts to be machined and then transferred directly into the tray. The process repeats until the tray is full, enabling extended, uninterrupted cycles with little or no operator intervention.
This solution is particularly valuable for small to medium-sized batch production where efficiency and cost control are paramount. The MT-S allows multiple parts to be machined, handled, and stored automatically, ensuring greater productivity even outside staffed hours. To protect sensitive components, the system is designed with an adjustable gripping force and a counterbalance function, ensuring secure handling while preventing potential damage. With several gripper styles available and interchangeable inserts tailored to part geometries, the MT-S adapts to a wide range of manufacturing needs.
One of the major advantages of the MT-S is its simple yet effective power source configuration. It can operate pneumatically, using air supplied through the spindle, or hydraulically, by utilizing the machine’s coolant supply. This flexibility makes it suitable for integration across different types of machine tools without requiring extensive modifications. Capable of handling workpieces weighing up to 17.6 pounds (8 kilograms), the MT-S delivers robust performance for a variety of applications.
In addition to boosting machine utilization, the MT-S offers practical benefits that set it apart from more complex robotic automation systems. It requires no additional floorspace, has a significantly lower upfront investment cost, and is far easier to train operators on. With no need for advanced programming, even shops with limited automation experience can begin reaping the benefits quickly. These advantages make it an ideal entry point into unattended machining for manufacturers looking to scale efficiency while keeping investments manageable.
The MT-S is part of Jergens’ growing portfolio of automation solutions that support modern manufacturing environments. Alongside complementary products such as the company’s machine washdown tool, the Zero Point System (ZPS), and a wide range of pneumatic and hydraulic devices, the MT-S further strengthens Jergens’ position as a provider of smart, practical tools for manufacturers aiming to maximize uptime and reduce manual intervention.
With the introduction of the MT-S Spindle Gripper, Jergens provides a simple yet powerful way for shops to automate their processes, extend productive hours, and improve operational efficiency. By bridging the gap between manual machining and full-scale robotic automation, it represents a practical step forward for shops of all sizes seeking smarter, unattended machining solutions.
