The Indian government is set to launch a “Green Steel Mission” to reduce carbon emissions from the steel industry, which currently contributes 10-12 per cent of India’s total emissions. The initiative includes a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for Green Steel, renewable energy incentives, and a mandate for government bodies to purchase green steel.

The Steel Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MoNRE) to decarbonise steel production. MoNRE’s “National Green Hydrogen Mission” aims to expand green hydrogen use in steel-making.

Despite a strong reserve of iron ore and non-coking coal, India’s reliance on imported coking coal has increased in recent years, with Australia being the largest supplier. However, India is diversifying its imports, with Russia’s share of coking coal increasing steadily.
