EOS GmbH, headquartered in Krailling, Germany, has announced a landmark collaboration with NASA through a Space Act Agreement, together with the EOS Additive Minds Academy, to deliver an advanced training programme in metal Additive Manufacturing. Titled the Metal AM Master Class, the course is designed to provide participants with hands-on training and in-depth exposure to the latest processes, technologies, and applications shaping the future of aerospace and high-performance manufacturing.

The programme will be held at the EOS technical centre in Pflugerville, Texas, from November 4 to 6, 2025. It is aimed at engineers, researchers, programme managers, industry leaders, and newcomers to the field who want to strengthen their expertise in Additive Manufacturing. Importantly, the course is structured as a technology-agnostic review of metal AM processes, ensuring that participants gain exposure to a range of approaches, including Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB), Directed Energy Deposition (DED), and other advanced methods.

The class will be co-led by two highly regarded experts in the field. Dr. Paul Gradl, Principal Engineer at NASA, and Dr. Omar Mireles, Additive Manufacturing R&D Engineer at Zia AM, will share their extensive experience in applying additive techniques to space flight and other demanding applications. Their lessons will combine both theoretical knowledge and practical insights drawn from years of work on high-performance components for aerospace and defense.

Participants will benefit from an intensive, structured programme that blends classroom learning with hands-on experience. The training will include a detailed overview of solid-state Additive Manufacturing processes and their associated process chains. It will also feature deep-dive sessions into the PBF-LB process chain, covering design considerations, post-processing steps, and quality assurance protocols. In addition, attendees will gain direct access to EOS’s advanced manufacturing systems, including the EOS M 290, EOS M 300-4, and EOS M 400-4 machines. This exposure will allow participants to develop build jobs, practice post-processing techniques, and conduct lab testing on real components.

Fabian Alefeld, global director of business development at EOS and leader of the Additive Minds Academy, described the programme as a unique opportunity for knowledge sharing. “This partnership embodies the power of public-private collaboration accelerating the adoption and understanding of Additive Manufacturing. Through our agreement with NASA, we are delivering unparalleled access to the expertise and technologies that are shaping the future of aerospace and advanced manufacturing,” he said.

The collaboration underscores the growing importance of training and workforce development in the Additive Manufacturing sector. While technological innovation has advanced rapidly, the need for skilled engineers and operators capable of implementing these technologies effectively remains a critical challenge. The Metal AM Master Class addresses this gap by combining world-class instruction with practical application, equipping participants to bring new capabilities directly into their organizations.

Graduates of the programme will receive an EOS Additive Minds Certificate of Completion, providing formal recognition of their advanced training. Beyond certification, the course is expected to help foster a community of practitioners who can share insights and collaborate across sectors to accelerate the broader adoption of metal Additive Manufacturing.

With demand for advanced components continuing to grow in aerospace, defense, energy, and other high-tech industries, the EOS–NASA partnership represents a significant step in ensuring that the necessary expertise keeps pace with technological progress. By blending the strengths of academia, industry, and government, the Metal AM Master Class is poised to become a benchmark in training for the additive community.
