BorgWarner Wins Major Chinese OEM Contract, Expands EV Motor Manufacturing Footprint in China!
By Ashutosh Arora
BorgWarner, a global leader in clean and efficient vehicle propulsion systems, has secured a significant contract from a leading Chinese OEM to supply its advanced electric motors—marking another strategic win in China’s fast-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) market. The awarded motor features a platform-based design, enabling compatibility with both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), offering automakers greater flexibility in their electrification strategies.
A standout feature of BorgWarner’s motor technology is its ultra-short hairpin welding process, which reduces end-turn height and significantly improves space utilization. This innovation not only optimizes motor packaging but also enhances overall efficiency, supporting the industry’s push for higher performance within compact designs.
Highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility, Dr. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President & General Manager of PowerDrive Systems, stated:
“BorgWarner remains committed to delivering smarter, more efficient motor solutions as we work together toward an electrified future.”
With demand for EVs continuing to surge, BorgWarner is stepping up its manufacturing capabilities in China. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Wuhu municipal government to establish a new manufacturing base dedicated to electric drive systems. This facility will incorporate intelligent manufacturing lines capable of producing multiple motor platforms on shared lines—maximizing flexibility and operational efficiency.
The new plant will not only serve BorgWarner’s growing Chinese customer base but also strengthen its role as a key player in the global EV supply chain. The ability to manufacture various motor types on the same production lines is expected to reduce lead times, optimize costs, and allow the company to respond swiftly to evolving market needs.
BorgWarner’s latest win underscores its reputation for delivering cutting-edge motor technologies that combine performance, efficiency, and scalability. The platform-based motor approach allows for streamlined production, easier adaptation across vehicle segments, and reduced development costs for OEMs.
China, the world’s largest EV market, presents immense opportunities for technology suppliers who can deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions tailored to local needs. BorgWarner’s combination of advanced engineering—such as the ultra-short hairpin welding—and its strategic investment in local manufacturing positions it strongly to capture a larger share of this market.
As automakers race to meet stricter emission regulations and consumer demand for clean mobility, suppliers like BorgWarner are playing a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s electrified future. With this new contract and the upcoming Wuhu manufacturing base, the company is solidifying its foothold in China while reinforcing its global commitment to sustainable, intelligent propulsion solutions.
