Ashok Leyland Teams Up with Nidec to Drive Electric Mobility Forward!

Ashok Leyland has entered into a strategic partnership with Nidec Motor Corporation, a subsidiary of Nidec Corporation based in Japan, to collaboratively develop advanced e-drive motors tailored for India’s commercial vehicle market. This multipronged agreement will focus on creating innovative electric mobility solutions that cater specifically to the unique needs of the industry.
As part of this collaboration, Ashok Leyland and Nidec will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to Electric Drive Units (EDUs). The CoE will concentrate on developing cutting-edge motor technologies and power electronics systems for electric vehicles (EVs), as well as innovations in gear-shifting mechanisms. Both companies will engage in joint research and development initiatives, sharing resources for skilling and lab infrastructure, while also working on differentiated motor technologies for Ashok Leyland’s EV portfolio and its subsidiary, Switch Mobility.
The partnership was formalized with the signing of an agreement by Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, and Michael Briggs, President of Nidec Motion & Energy.
In addition to sourcing motors from Nidec for its current electric vehicle lineup, Ashok Leyland will collaborate on R&D efforts for future electric solutions. This partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to innovation and their shared goal of designing e-drives that can effectively operate across India’s diverse terrains and meet the specific operational demands of the commercial vehicle sector. Furthermore, the collaboration aims to strengthen the local supply chain for next-generation electric vehicles in India, enhancing the country’s capabilities in electric mobility.
