Toyota will become a member of Tesla’s electric vehicle charging network

Monday 23 October 2023, 6:59:44 PM

Toyota and Lexus electric vehicle owners in North America will be able to charge on Tesla’s network beginning in 2025, and Toyota will also begin adopting Tesla’s EV connection. Toyota announced that it will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard plug in a little more than a year. Toyota EVs using the Combined Charging System connector will be able to charge at Tesla stations with an adaptor beginning in 2025. According to the announcement, Toyota’s collaboration with Tesla allows EV users access to more than 12,000 Tesla plugs in North America.

The statement follows similar ones by Hyundai, Kia, and BMW for their electric automobiles. Other automakers want Tesla’s Supercharger network because it has more direct current fast-charging ports in the United States than any other network, and its stations are strategically located along motorway travel routes. Hyundai and Kia have stated that their EVs will include a NACS port beginning next year.

Tesla’s electric vehicle plug is rapidly approaching industry-standard status. SAE International, formerly known as the Society of Automotive Engineers, said in June that it would establish performance criteria for Tesla’s electric vehicle charging connections. The decision by the American Automobile Association comes just weeks after Ford, General Motors, and Rivian announced plans to join Tesla’s massive Supercharger network and use its NACS connector in upcoming versions of their electric vehicles. Volvo Cars has also agreed to join Tesla’s charging network.
