Stellantis to Build Second Electric Vehicle Battery Plant in the U.S.

Tuesday 25 July 2023, 6:46:20 PM

Stellantis said it will partner with Samsung to develop a second electric vehicle battery manufacturing in the United States. The site was not disclosed, but the automaker announced Monday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung SDI under its existing joint venture, StarPlus Energy.

The new plant will open in early 2027, joining an existing joint-venture facility in Kokomo, Indiana, which is now under development and set to begin production in early 2025.
According to CEO Carlos Tavares, the second factory will enable the business to deliver at least 25 new battery-electric vehicles in North America by the end of the decade.

Stellantis expects half of its passenger car and light truck sales in the United States to be battery electric by 2030. In the same time span, the corporation hopes to have 100% of its sales in Europe be electric. The new venture’s financial details were not disclosed.

The Kokomo plant, located approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of Indianapolis, will employ up to 1,400 people and will cost approximately $2.5 billion. Previously, the business announced a $4.1 billion battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, which would employ approximately 2,500 people. It’s a collaboration with LG Energy Solution. Stellantis was founded in 2021 by the amalgamation of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Peugeot of France.
