Stellantis Selects Kokomo, Indiana, for Second U.S. Battery Partnership with Samsung

Stellantis, the maker of Jeeps, has announced plans to develop a second electric vehicle battery factory in Kokomo, Indiana, creating 1,400 new employees. The $3.2 billion joint venture factory with South Korean firm Samsung SDI will begin production in early 2027. The firm’s first joint venture factory in Kokomo, which is set to open in early 2025, is already under construction. The $3.1 billion project, announced in May 2022, is also expected to produce approximately 1,400 new employees.

Stellantis Chief Operating Officer for North America Mark Stewart said early Wednesday that the city of Kokomo, about 60 miles (97 kilometres) north of Indianapolis, made a compelling argument for the second production to be located there. Yoon-ho Choi, CEO of Samsung SDI, stated that Kokomo will be the company’s largest production facility for electric car batteries in North America. He claims it will assist Stellantis in hastening the transition to a new era of EVs. “Today’s commitment from Stellantis and Samsung SDI will double the capital investment, the new jobs created, and the impact this joint venture will have on Kokomo and the state of Indiana for decades to come,” the governor of Indiana, Eric Holcomb, said in a statement.
