SNC-Lavalin secures first Canadian battery plant contract at $141 million.

EcoProBM has granted SNC-Lavalin an initial works contract to design and develop one of Canada’s largest Cathode Active Material (CAM) plants in Bécancour, Québec. The initial works contract is valued at roughly $141 million and is SNC-Lavalin’s first significant mandate in Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) battery sector. “With a unique endowment of critical minerals, a well-established manufacturing and industrial base, and a largely decarbonized and expanding power grid, Canada has the opportunity to establish an end-to-end supply chain that can support growing domestic and international EV demand,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of SNC-Lavalin. “With our unique end-to-end capabilities that span across industries like mining, industrial & manufacturing, and clean power, all of which support the battery and EV markets, SNC-Lavalin is strongly positioned to support governments and manufacturers and deliver on the diverse pipeline of opportunities arising from the EV revolution, both in Canada and around the world.”

The Engineering Services groups of SNC-Lavalin will supply EcoProBM with initial concept design, basic design, and project management and delivery for the plant’s establishment.CAM is an important battery component in electric vehicles. It accounts for roughly 40% of the cost of a battery cell. EcoProBM has created a joint venture with Ford Motor Company and cell manufacturer SK On Co. to build the $1.3 billion CAM factory in the Bécancour Industrial Park, which is located between Quebec City and Montreal. EcoProBM’s second foreign factory is in Canada. The first of the three lines is scheduled to go into production in April 2026. This factory will have a yearly capacity of 45,000 tonnes.
