Methods Machine Tools Inc. has unveiled the latest version of its Sidekick automation package, an innovative solution designed to enhance productivity for small- and medium-sized manufacturers using the FANUC RoboDrill platform. Engineered as a collaborative system, the Sidekick enables light, unattended machining, helping shops improve utilization, reduce manual labor, and optimize workflow efficiency.

At the heart of the Sidekick is the FANUC CRX-10iA/L collaborative robot, a proven performer in industrial automation. Mounted on a standardized table, the robot can handle up to 30 workpieces, offering exceptional flexibility and ease of integration into existing machining environments. With a maximum payload of 22 lbs. and a pallet size of 19.25″ × 29.25″, the Sidekick is ideal for small-part production runs, enabling continuous operation even during off-hours. The system’s compact 36″ × 42″ table and 110 VAC, single-phase power requirement make it easy to install without extensive infrastructure changes.

One of the Sidekick’s most appealing features is its customization flexibility. Users can choose to develop their own end-of-arm tooling, part grid plates, and programming, or opt for a pre-configured package from Methods that comes ready with standardized infeed/outfeed grid plates and tooling. This dual option ensures accessibility for both automation newcomers and experienced users looking for rapid deployment.

According to David Chesnutt, senior vice president of sales at Methods Machine Tools, the Sidekick represents a major step forward in making automation more attainable for smaller shops. “With the Sidekick, we have launched an easy-to-use, cost-effective, complete automation solution so shops can expand their utilization and productivity,” he says. “The Sidekick is well-suited for those smaller shops looking to make their first leap into automation alongside a trusted and proven vertical machining center in the industry.”

Darren Wall, product manager for FANUC RoboDrill at Methods, adds that usability and reliability were key priorities during development. “We created a solution that is as easy as possible for operators. It’s a lightweight solution with minimal setup and automated processes to further cut down on manual intervention, built with the longevity and quality expected from Methods and FANUC solutions.”

Beyond its standalone capabilities, the Sidekick forms part of the Methods Night Crew portfolio, a suite of fully integrated FANUC RoboDrill production systems designed to maximize uptime and productivity during unattended operations. This portfolio reflects Methods’ ongoing commitment to advancing automation solutions that blend ease of use, durability, and scalability—allowing even smaller manufacturers to compete effectively in a high-demand production landscape.

With the launch of the Sidekick, Methods Machine Tools continues to democratize access to smart manufacturing technologies, empowering shops to embrace automation confidently, improve part consistency, and boost profitability—all while maintaining the precision and reliability synonymous with FANUC and Methods.
