Friction stir welding uses a non-consumable tool to heat, soften and then mechanically mix the materials around the joint to create a gas tight seal, especially useful in the food & beverage market where ingress of bacteria between joints is an issue. The joints can also be stronger than conventional welded joints and the process can even weld dissimilar materials together. Metal removal and welding all on one machine from Heller, who knew?
