Big Daishowa has unveiled a new generation of negative inserts engineered for its SW rough boring and EWN fine boring heads, delivering a significant leap in productivity, tool life, and cost efficiency. These inserts, featuring a proprietary six-edge geometry, are designed to maximize cutting performance while reducing consumable costs — a game-changer for machinists tackling demanding applications across industries such as mold and die, heavy equipment, and precision manufacturing.

The SW roughing heads are now equipped with trigon-shaped ZN inserts, which increase the number of usable cutting corners per insert, directly lowering tooling expenses. These inserts are available in two sizes, enabling a broad boring range from Ø1.260” to 8.00”, and are optimized with specific grades for steel and cast iron. This tailored approach ensures superior tool life and performance, even in the most challenging materials like large welded assemblies and die molds.

What sets these inserts apart is their special cutting-edge preparation, which provides a positive-geometry cutting action despite the insert’s negative shape. This innovation maintains cutting pressures at the same or even lower levels compared to conventional positive inserts — delivering smoother operation, improved chip evacuation, and extended tool longevity.

Alan Miller, Senior Engineering Manager at Big Daishowa, highlights the innovation behind the new design: “The ZN insert features a never-before-seen geometry that helps customers achieve remarkable productivity gains while maintaining exceptional surface finishes.”

Complementing the roughing range, Big Daishowa also introduced triangle-shaped TN inserts for its EWN fine boring heads. Like the ZN inserts, these TN versions incorporate a double-sided, positive-geometry cutting edge for enhanced efficiency and reduced cost per edge. They are ideal for finishing operations within a boring range of Ø1.614” to 6.024”, offering high repeatability and consistent dimensional accuracy.

By merging advanced insert design with proven boring head technology, Big Daishowa continues to push the limits of precision machining. The result is a versatile, high-performance boring solution that minimizes downtime, reduces consumable costs, and enhances overall machining productivity — empowering manufacturers to achieve more with every rotation.
