By Ashutosh Arora
Rolls-Royce, the globally renowned manufacturer of luxury automobiles and advanced power systems, has inaugurated its largest Global Capability and Innovation Centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in its global growth strategy. The centre was formally opened by Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, MB Patil, who underscored the importance of this investment in strengthening Karnataka’s role as India’s leading hub for aerospace, defence, and high-value engineering.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Patil highlighted Bengaluru’s position as one of the world’s top three aerospace cities in terms of foreign investment. “The state is home to a diverse range of companies excelling across the entire aerospace and defence value chain,” he said, noting that Karnataka offers a unique ecosystem where multinational corporations, domestic manufacturers, research institutions, and start-ups collaborate to develop cutting-edge technologies. The state’s Aerospace and Defence Policy, offering attractive incentives and enabling ease of doing business, has been a key driver of this growth.
Patil cited examples of industry leaders operating in Karnataka, including Aequs and Collins Aerospace in propulsion and power systems, Wipro and Mahindra Aerospace in structural components, and global giants such as Boeing and Airbus, alongside space-tech innovators like Pixxel. He also acknowledged companies like Sarla and Tata Advanced Systems for their critical contributions in end-manufacturing. “With such a collaborative ecosystem, we are able to create technology and solutions that serve not just India but the world,” he added.
The event also saw participation from Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, and Helen McCabe, Global CFO of Rolls-Royce, alongside senior dignitaries, reflecting the strategic importance of the centre both for India and for Rolls-Royce’s global operations.
The new Bengaluru centre will serve as a key node in Rolls-Royce’s worldwide network, driving innovation, operational excellence, and digital transformation. By expanding its footprint in India, the company aims to enhance its ability to serve global markets in aerospace, defence, energy, and marine sectors. The centre is expected to generate significant local employment, attract skilled talent, and further integrate India into the company’s long-term innovation and manufacturing strategy.
Rolls-Royce’s commitment to India reflects its broader transformation journey. The company, which operates in 48 countries and serves customers in over 100, is undertaking an ambitious restructuring program to build a leaner, more agile, and financially resilient business. This involves optimizing global operations, scaling digital solutions, and aligning with the global shift towards sustainable energy systems. In 2024, Rolls-Royce reported underlying revenues of £17.8 billion and an underlying operating profit of £2.46 billion, underscoring the scale and resilience of its business across civil aerospace, defence, and power systems.
With its new Global Capability Centre in Bengaluru, Rolls-Royce aims not only to strengthen its operational support for international customers but also to leverage India’s growing engineering talent and innovation ecosystem. As the aerospace and defence industries pivot towards cleaner energy, smarter digital technologies, and resilient global supply chains, Bengaluru’s role as a strategic innovation hub for Rolls-Royce is expected to grow even further.
This development reaffirms India’s rise as a critical partner in the global technology and manufacturing landscape, while strengthening Rolls-Royce’s ability to deliver advanced power solutions that enable connectivity, defense readiness, and sustainable progress across the world.
